El término color base suele utilizarse en relación con los PANTONE Matching Systems (PMS). Estos colores Pantone -más de 2.000 en total desde 2023- se mezclan a partir de colores base PANTONE en distintas proporciones de mezcla.
Se añadieron cuatro colores base adicionales a los 14 colores base originales del PMS tras la interrupción de PANTONE GOE. En 2023 se añadieron otros 5 colores base.

Estos colores base son a su vez colores PANTONE, pero también se utilizan para mezclar todos los colores PANTONE.
En 2023, se volvieron a recopilar las formulaciones de color del sistema PANTONE Matching System para PANTONE Solid Coated y Uncoated. Ahora todos los colores pueden formularse a partir de solo 11 colores base.
